While it's of the utmost importance that we eat well, it's equally important to supplement our nutrient levels with high-quality supplements. We can get loads of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants from food (and need to!), but it's nearly impossible to get 100% of optimal levels of what we need every single day.
Some research shows that you'd have to eat 22,000 calories and spend more than $33 per day on food just to get the optimal levels of essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidants each day. (That's nuts!)

Those are some crazy stats!
Those numbers come from a study of over 150,000 people in North America...they really covered the spectrum. So the next time you think that "hey I eat a healthy balanced diet so I do not need to supplement"...you may want to think again?
You may be thinking "ok I can see that supplementation is important if I want provide my body with all the nutrition it needs to live a long healthy life".
Great...but only one problem...not all supplements are created equal. Not even close!
Sadly the supplement industry is very poorly regulated. Supplements are not regulated by the FDA nor are they held to what should be an appropriate standard for something that is considered "healthy".

Virtually all supplements fall into the food grade category.
Food grade means that a supplement just needs to meet about 60% of what it claims, it can have fillers, byproduct, other chemicals and toxins in the product. And yes, your sick cousin can make them without washing his hands after blowing his nose.
Unfortunately virtually every vitamin and mineral supplement at your grocery store, pharmacy, and supplement store at the mall falls into this category.

Here are a few differences on the RDA and optimal levels of a few vitamins:
RDA: 40-125mg/day Optimal: 1000+mg/day
To get 1000+mg of vitamin C per day you would need to drink 10 glasses of orange juice. That is 1,120 calories alone.
RDA: 6-28.5 IU Optimal: 400-800 IU
Ready for this? The best sources of vitamin E is almonds but guess how many you would need to eat? 3 pounds...thats 8,957 calories!
I gotta give you one more...
RDA: 400-800 IU/day Optimal: 2000+ IU/day
17 glasses of milk. Yep you would need to drink 17 glasses of milk to get the lower level of the optimal recommendation. Not being a big fan of dairy that is just crazy.
Whether it's vitamin C, D, E or any other essential vitamin and mineral, it is virtually impossible to get optimal levels from food. That is unless you want to eat thousands of calories per day.
