In October of 2016 I retired from my corporate job, walked out of the "ivory tower", and left hundreds of thousands of dollars on the table.
Your first thought is probably "what the hell is Joel thinking?". Well let me tell you...
Honestly looking back I can truly say the only thing that motivated me to get a career in oil and gas was the pay check. It is a lucrative industry with loads of benefits and you don't need to work 80 hours a week to make a multiple six figure income.
Sounds good, right?!
At first it was. Putting on my suit and tie, heading downtown to work and mingle with corporate executives, and applying my recently acquired geoscience skills was fairly exciting.
But right out of the gates I felt a void. Something just wasn't right but I couldn't put my finger on it?
I had done everything the "right way". Gone to university, received a professional degree, and got a great job paying me close to six figures right out of university.
There where days that were fun and exciting but overall I didn't love my job (I will tell you how to recognize this in a moment). However, I thought this is how life is. Jobs aren't necessarily fun all the time and only a select few on the planet get to do what they truly love.
The reality set in that I was working for the weekend. Working for the paycheque and trying to be satisfied with doing it. I soon realized that everyone can do something they love and not just those select few like I previously thought.
So, I started to seek out different ways of creating a little side gig with hopes that one day it may turn into something BIG. Nothing major just something fun that I loved to do.
I had always had a passion for nutrition and fitness so I thought I would do something in that field. I stumbled, stumbled, and stumbled again until I finally landed onto what is Elite Life & Wellness.
At ELW I share tips, articles, and programs that will help you in optimizing your health, your life, and your business (it is a constant evolution). After about 1 year of running ELW and wanted to expand my passion for nutrition and fitness further.
I dream of mine was to always own a gym. But opening a gym is no easy task. I am going to save you the time and not dive into the details but eventually I learned about Fit Body Boot Camp.
Fit Body Boot Camp is a fitness franchise that really struck a cord we me. I decided that I wanted to open one but couldn't figure out exactly how I was going to do so. After all, I had a wife and a newborn so I couldn't just walk away from my corporate job and go all in. They needed to eat too!
Enter my brother. I approached him, asked if he wanted to join me on this adventure, and he gladly excepted.
In December 2015 we opened our doors to our Lethbridge Fit Body Boot Camp location.
To make a long story short, less then one year after opening our Fit Body Boot Camp I fired my boss and we moved from Calgary, Alberta back to Lethbridge where our family and our Fit Body Boot Camp resides.
Now if you think this was easy, think again. I am going to write an article about how to do exactly what I did and lay out the Blueprint to Be Your Own Boss so I will skip it for now. But lets just say it called for very early mornings...like 4:30am, dedication, and LOTS of personal development.
But why did I do this? I was being paid over $100,000 per year with the potential to make multiple six figures in the coming years through a long term pay out agreement.
I realized that life was more than money. At first I think most young adults seek a career in a field due to he finances. Rarely do we chase a career in something we truly love. You can't tell me that most Dr.'s, dentists, engineers, lawyers, etc. are doing that because that 100% absolutely LOVE IT!
They may really enjoy it but they also enjoy making $$$!
Anyways, here is the part where I tell you how to know if you absolutely lover your job. Ready?!
If you can look around your office, retail job, where ever you work and you do not truly aspire to be like your boss then you should get the hell out. Do you want their hours, their responsibility, their legacy?
If not, you are not living your "dream".
There were people higher up at my office that made upwards of $300,000 to $500,000 per year but did I want their life...not a chance.
I am not saying that money is not important. After all money is not secret to happiness but it is the vehicle to freedom. We should all strive to make more money in our lives as when we are open to receive more we are open to give more. And I don't necessarily mean give money.
It comes down to your WHY.
Why are you doing what you are doing?
This isn't necessarily an easy question to answer.
I have 2 whys:
1. To create an incredible life for myself and my family. One where we have the money to do what we want but more importantly the time to do what we want. You can't do this at a 9-5.
2. To help 100,000 people get healthy, happy, and live life on their own terms.
These two factors inspired and motivated me to make the leap from golden handcuffs to life on my own terms. And I can honestly say I would never go back.
So answer these questions:
Do you truly aspire to be like your boss? I mean really aspire. Like if you could do anything in the world it is what you would choose?
Are you happy?
Do you have the money and more importantly the time to do what you want?
Do you jump out of bed each morning excited to make the world a better place?
If you answered no to any of those, it is time to start carving a new path. It doesn't need to be something big right out of the gates. Like me you could start building something you are passionate about. Once you have found what you want to create for yourself go ALL IN!
Live Your Best Life,
