But get past the sometimes bitter taste and you have an awesome fruit with some incredible health benefits.
From reducing your appetite to cancer prevention to healthier skin...grapefruits offer more than you might think!
But if you can tolerate the sometimes bitterness, which truthfully isn't that bad, the health benefits are surprisingly juicy!
One whole grapefruit provides...
- 0 grams fat
- 26 grams carbs (4 grams of fiber + 17 grams sugar)
- 2 grams protein
- 57% vitamin A (a huge dose of Lycopene)
- 128% vitamin C
Firstly, a grapefruit has a nice balance of fructose to glucose. Virtually one-to-one. This is good thing as or bodies cannot metabolize fructose and therefore stores it as fat.
The glycemic index of a grapefruit is 23 and the glycemic load is 3. Both very low making this a favourable option. Grapefruit juice is about double so reach for the solid variety more often.
The high vitamin C levels give your immune system an added boost. Vitamin C can also help improve cardiovascular health, decrease your cancer risk, and improve your blood sugar levels.
Lycopene, a vitamin A carotenoid, is a powerful anti-oxidant. It also gives grapefruits their red color. Lycopene is responsible for majority of the health benefits associated with grapefruits.
Reduced cancer, cardiovascular disease, skin aging, and even infertility may all be benefits of Lycopene.
- A metabolism boost (although not quite what is claimed in the grapefruit diet)
- Contains a handful of minerals
- Prevents gum disease
- Creates an alkaline reaction
- Aids in digestion
I have to be honest. It was not until very recently that I have began eating grapefruits again. Not sure why I wasn't, but I am absolutely loving them.
To go along with all the health benefits with grapefruits they just make you feel good. There is something to said about how the slightly sour and bitterness of this moon shaped fruit makes you feel.
One disclaimer...grapefruits can interact with some medications so it is recommended that you do eat grapefruits and drink grapefruit juice when taking a pharmaceutical.
