While I am not a strict follower of any one diet but rather I like to take the good, leave the bad, and if it doesn't work for me it get's kick to the curb approach, there are a few things that all these diets have in common.
How many people do you now that have tried one of the above diets and lost weight? Probably lots. You may even have one friend who eats Paleo, another who is a vegetarian, and they both lost weight, gained energy, and their overall health improved.
If a certain diet is really that much better then all the others then how come millions of people can and do have success with each one?
Every plan will have their pro's and con's but at the very foundation of each diet many of their principles and concepts are the same. Do you think anyone one of these diets says eating french fries or drinking a frappachino is healthy?
Reduction in calories.
The standard North American diet is filled packaged foods, processed foods, fast foods, etc., all loaded to the brim with hidden calories. What is one of the first things each good diet is going to tell you...replace all that garbage with real whole foods.
By making this simple change to your eating habits you are going to significantly reduce your overall caloric intake.
Cut out the sugar.
Sugar is hidden everywhere today and it one of the leading causes of those bulging bellies and increased degenerative diseases like diabetes and heart disease.
Did you now that since 1820 sugar consumption has gone from about 8 pounds/year/person to a whopping 100 pounds/year/person?! But the real reason we are all getting fat has got to be the fat right?
Every single good diet will tell you that you have to reduce your sugar intake. Throw that shit out and it is pretty safe to say you will lose weight and drastically increase your health.
Every single diet plan will focus on sourcing the best quality, whole, real foods that you can. If you can eat organic and free-range even better.
Why? Because eating nutrient dense foods will beat a bag of Doritos any day of the week!
Consume a lot of vegetables.
Ever heard a good diet that says just have a few pieces of broccoli and a carrot stick each day and you will regain your health? NOPE!
Vegetables are loaded with micronutrients, phytonutrients, anti-oxidants, fiber, and health keep you fuller longer. All variables that are need for healthy weight management and optimal health.
Although each good diet may have largely varying opinions on certain concepts and philosophies the underlying principles are the same. Eat less garbage, and more whole foods. Cut out the sugar and replace it with vegetables.
Digging into each one more we could grow this "similarity" list to quite a long one. Sure Vegans and Paleo'ers like to beat their heads together but deep down their diets are fairly similar.
Eating doesn't need to be a complicated, stressful journey. Find what "diet", or aspects of each, works for you and stick to it. Don't get caught up in which one is the absolute best!
