We talked about why we need to supplement, that all supplement companies are not created equal, now let's dig into what we should actually be taking to merge onto the road of optimal health.
Providing your body (your gut) with good bacteria will not only support a healthy digestive system but it will drastically increase your immune strength.
You can get probiotics form sources like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, etc. but personally I find myself not consuming enough of the stuff (I don't do well with dairy and I just can't come to terms with sauerkraut every meal) to maintain the levels of probiotics in my system that I would like...probiotics to the rescue.
Every single person will have one or more different deficiencies present in their system. The only way to really nail that down is to get some pretty intense blood work. Taking a multi will (should) cover the spectrum of micronutrients so that whatever your deficiency is, it can "fill" the void.
3. Fish Oil.
Omega fatty acids (3 and 6) are essential fatty acids the we can only get from our diet. We want to strive for a omega 3:6 ratio to be 1:1. Now in this day and age of industrial seeds oils, processed food, conventionally raised meats, that ratio is like 1:20 in favour of the 6.
This problem with this is that having much higher omega 6's than 3's can lead to inflammation, oxidation, pain in your joints, and increased risk of developing a degenerative disease.
So the best way to get this ratio back to 1:1 is to reduce those mentioned foods in your diet and supplement with high quality fish oil. The benefit to a high quality fish oil, and I stress high quality, is that the supplement will contain undetectable amounts of mercury. Especially when compared to consuming fish (the sad reality).
4. Vitamin D.
Vitamin D is a micronutrient that has undergone a ton of research in the last few years. More and more studies are coming out on the importance of vitamin D. So...if you cannot get out in the sun for at least 30 minutes each day supplementing with vitamin D should be on the top of your list.
5. Liver Support Supplement.
Having a optimally functioning liver will lead to optimally functioning you! Don't underestimate the importance of your liver. I always thought that as long as you weren't a boozer your liver was perfect. Well I have learned that is not the case. Start being conscious on the "state" of your liver everyday.
If you are confused about what you should be taking on a regular basis I hope that this helps a little. Honestly I think that absolutely everyone can and should be take these supplements as a minimum in order to achieve optimal health!
