I thought this would be a great opportunity to share with you my top 5 favourite travel foods, specifically when flying. Whether you are looking for a healthy breakfast or a healthy dinner, airport food can be a nightmare. However with a little searching you can find a few good options lurking around here and there.
Obviously the absolute healthiest option is to pack your own food. You could pre-make some salads, grab some healthy snacks, or buy some healthy protein bars and pack some veggies. That being said most of us do not do that...myself included.
One option that I used to experiment with is to fast on days when I traveled. I thought, "you know whats healthier than airport food...no airport food and a good ol' day of fasting". Well I don't really like to do that anymore. Although I am not a stressful flyer, some parts of it can get the cortisol flowing a little bit. I find when I was in fasted state I would just get to irritable or grumpy!
Let's get into it! Top 5 healthy travel (airport) foods...
1. Kind Bars.
3. Chicken Salads.
4. Protein Bars.
When looking at the ingredients keep these things in mind:
- the less ingredients the better
- can you pronounce everything on the label
- contains little sugar
- does't contain boat loads of artificial sweeteners (if you can find a bar that has say 10 grams of natural sugar or less, that is a better choice than a bar with no sugar but contains aspartame or sucralose)
- if the label has a healthier "look" to it it probably is (not always the case)
5. Beef Jerky.
One caution...look at the sugar content. Some jerky's do contain more sugar than you think so try to stick to an original or peppered flavour.
I hope that some of these will help you not completely fall off the wagon next time your in an airport! One thing that I didn't talk about, because every airport is different, is that more and more decent quality restaurants are popping up inside airports. It is possible to get a fairly healthy meal nowadays. Just apply your typical healthy restaurant choices when dining at an airport and you should do alright.
