My main goal is to create more time in my life. More time for my family, friends, and to take part in incredible experiences.
The #1 way that I currently save time might surprise you but it is one of the best decisions I have ever made...
For myself grocery shopping used to take about 3 hours a week. Usually on a Saturday or Sunday just like everyone else.
Well I am pumped to say that has all changed.
About 5 months ago my wife and I had our first child. I think for most people having your first child puts life into perspective and allows you to see what is truly important.
For us that is time together as a family. And time together doesn't mean in a line at the grocery store.
You see, we used to enjoy grocery shopping. Going to the farmer's market, talking with the vendors, supporting local growers, and purchasing high quality food. But that has all changed.
We used to have 14-16 hours in the day to do whatever we wanted. Well not anymore. Now our son "dictates" when we have time to get things done, spend time together, and yes grocery shop.
Grocery shopping quickly changed from an enjoyable experience to a task that we had to squeeze in between naps and feeds. So we sat down and looked at areas of our life that we could outsource in order to save time and grocery shopping was at the top of that list.
There is a service here in Calgary (and many major cities in the US and Canada) called SPUD. Sustainable Produce Urban Delivery. They focus on supplying high quality, local, organic produce, free-range meat, and anything in between. It's amazing!
How it works is you do your grocery shopping online and every week SPUD will deliver for free right to your door step.
It is truly incredible!
Now our grocery shopping looks like this...
Put our son to bed, pour a glass of wine, cozy up on the couch, and do our shopping for the week. It may not seem like a big deal but this one simple change has been one of the best decisions we have ever made.
But it gets even better. At first we thought "hey if it costs us $100-$200 more per month it will still be worth it". It was the price we were willing to pay to outsource this part of our life. Well we have been using this service now for 6 weeks and I can confidently say we are SAVING money!
At first I thought there was no way but numbers don't lie and here they are:
Before SPUD we would spend an average of $323 per week on food.
Using SPUD we are spending an average of $303 per week.
Now I need to mention this. We have always focused on buying local, organic, and free-range grass-fed meats. This probably increases the cost of our food by about 30%-40% when compared to buying conventional but it is something that we will never sacrifice.
So coming back to the cost of food per week, although we are saving money, if you buy conventional meat and produce using SPUD will be more expensive then what you are paying right now.
However if you do buy organic and sustainable food, SPUD will not only save you time but it will almost certainly save you money as well. How do you argue with that!
But wait...there's more (and not a free bath robe)...
If I factor in that we would drive about 28 km round trip to the farmers market and Natural Community Foods (our local health food store) at 18L/100km (we have a truck) we would spend an additional $6.55 on gas.
Last but not least, if I were to use the saved 3 hours to work on business related items, and a value my time at $50 per hour (which would be on the very low side) you could say that I am saving an additional $150.
So if you add it all up you could argue that we are saving $176.55 per week!
Oh...and I nearly forgot to mention that SPUD has a points program. You build up points and can redeem them save money on your next purchase. After 6 weeks of using SPUD we have built up enough points for about $55 off. Thats not pocket change that's real money!
Honestly this service is a no brainer. My guess is we will never grocery shop again.
I would recommend everyone give SPUD a try. Not only will you save time and maybe a little cash, but you will be eating super high quality food that is both good for you and the planet. If that is not a win-win-win-win I don't know what is!
And remember this, you can never get back time! You can always make more money, turn back the clock by getting healthier, or change your outlook towards life but once time passes it is never coming back.
Live Your Best Life,
