Whatever your goal is in life there are certain "steps" that need to be taken in order to achieve that goal. Some habits need to be kicked to the curb and others need to be introduced into your life. But one thing is for certain...eliminating temptations is more important than doing things right!
The answer is yes!
However what I mean by that statement is that reaching your goal will be much easier and quicker if the very first thing you do is eliminate temptations.
Lets focus on fat loss. It is the perfect example of this concept.
Fat loss can be difficult. Why? Temptations! Burger joints, pizza parlours, ice cream, doughnuts, cake, soda, pie, nachos are around every corner.
Unhealthy foods is unfortunately what the Westernized world subsides on. Convenience, price, and taste is what the majority of people reach for when the dinner bell gets rung.
You on the other hand have a mission. You want to lose weight. So, you find a coach, get a nutrition program, and hit the grocery store, or better yet farmers market, to load up on all things healthy. Your kitchen shelves are stocked with tons of veggies, healthy meats, fruits, tubers, etc.
But one problem. You don't throw out the cookies, chips, soda, chicken fingers, all things delicious that were a previous staple. But thats ok right because you are focused. Nothing is going to stop you from dropping those damn 20 pounds.
Week number 1 perfect. Week two, down another 2 pounds. Week 3, you have eaten good all week, you can have a bag of chips right? Sunday...mmmm some pancakes?
Ok ok back on track. Week 4 doing good...shit fat Fridays at work and doughnuts, muffins, and cinnamon buns are brought in. So you have 1,2, oops 4.
The human mind struggles with temptations. It is a trait that is ingrained into our DNA from back in the days when foods was scarce. When a kill was made humans would eat and eat and eat. Why? Because they were not sure when the next meal was going to be.
This is not really a temptation as we see it but our temptations stem from this ancient evolutionary trait.
If temptations are constantly around you, you are going to have a mental fist fight with yourself. I know that every time pizza, doughnuts, and ice cream are around me I just have to leave the room. If not I will end up eating the entire cake!
Ever walk into a room only to discover some fresh baked cinnamon buns? Your very first reaction may be "nope I am good". Then you start to think about. Your staring that melting sugary topping down like a Mexican standoff.
You say to yourself again "NO, I have been eating good all week"! Then a third thought runs through your head "hey I have been eating good all week...maybe just one".
You reach for that sweet swirly bun and devour that soft gooey goodness. Then another, then you tell yourself you can have a couple more as long as you get back on track tomorrow. Next thing you know you fell off the wagon, disappointed with yourself, and give up the whole fat loss thing entirely.
Now this is kind of an extreme example but it is not far off from the reality most of us face. Temptations are around every corner whether it is weight loss, drinking less, opening a new business, or trying to quit smoking.
And the number one thing you can do to be successful is to eliminate these temptations as best you can from your life. Even if you are doing everything by the book, if temptations are around you you will eventually succumb to them. It is human nature.
Having good habits, discipline, and procedures are important and necessary if you want to achieve a big goal. After all they steer you in the right direction and keep you motivated. But eliminating all things that will get in your way is the fastest road to success.
Maybe you have a friend that is always peer pressuring you into going out, drinking beer, and eating chicken wings. They don't really support your fat loss effort and would rather you just give up, come out, and have a good time with them. Well perhaps the best thing to do is to eliminate that person from your life?
Temptations do not need to be the box of Krispy Kreme's on your counter, they could be a person in your life, where you live, maybe your job?
To some the idea of quitting their job in order to achieve a goal may seem completely ridiculous but if it is something you want bad enough then it might be what you have to do.
So before you begin your new journey to successfully achieve your goal the absolute first thing you should do is sit down and write down all the things you are going to do to eliminate the temptations from your life.
Before you begin your new fat loss program throw away all the garbage food that remains in your house. Don't keep anything lying around on the premise that you just won't eat it.
Eliminating temptations is more important than doing things right!
