Now obviously there are certain things that need to get done but we don't LOVE doing them...washing the bathroom! Some of these "necessities" are just a part of living and you are not going to enjoy doing them every single time.
But what I am really talking about are the jobs, favors, projects, and choices in your life that you have 100% control over. What about those things? Do you truly love those things? Do they fit into your vision of how your life should be? If the answer is NO then it is time you start thinking of a change!
In my opinion every detail of your life should either be pushing you one step closer to your goals or bringing you true passion. Is every project or task you take on putting you one step closer to your ultimate goal? My guess is probably not and this is something that you should think about changing immediately!
This is extremely important...when you say yes to something you are saying no to something else!
Every time you begin a new task or job, that "thing" is going to take time and energy. If that task does not push you one step closer to achieving your ultimate goals, then you simply should not do it.
Now I know what some of you are thinking, "but what do I do when my boss asks me to do something"? While in that exact moment in time you might not be able to say no, even though you would love too, without risk of some undesired consequences. If that is the case then you need to take a step back and think "is this job/career something I am truly passionate about? Am I doing something that I absolutely LOVE?" If you are not, then I highly recommend spending some time thinking about things that get you excited about life. Find what those "things" are and incorporate them into your life.
Maybe you love love love to surf. But right now you are an account and live 2000 km's from the ocean. You make $125,000 which is great, but everyday you are miserable because you simple want to be in the water. You now what will make you happy...quit, move to the ocean, and surf. Yes you might not be able to be an account, yes you might only make $50,000 a year, but inside and out you will experience true happiness! What is stopping you? Do you care what other people will think? How others may judge you?
Thinking that way will only bring you one thing...misery, no purpose, and unhappiness. I suggest stop thinking that way right now!
Anyways back to the idea of no...
Saying no is difficult. You might be saying no to something that would be fun and exciting. Saying no might hurt a friends feelings (maybe they asked you to move but you really need to finish a certain project). In the short term saying no might stir the pot a little, but in the long run saying no will bring you happiness and success!
It is a difficult concept to grasp and something that a blog post doesn't really do justice. Put it this way, if you know that once you reach your ultimate goal, perhaps running diving tours on the Great Barrier Reef, you we feel absolute happiness and success, then every single thing that you do in life should put you one step closer to that goal. If a group of people ask you to teach a diving course and you will get paid $5000, but it doesn't put you closer to working in Australia you should say no and put that effort into what does move you in the right direction.
Now obviously if pursuing your dreams requires a career change there is going to be a cross over period, I period where you will we working on your ultimate goal, but still need to work 40 hours per week to pay the bills. That's ok. You have already taken a step in the right direction. It isn't going to change over night. What is important is that it is going to change! And you are going to do everything in your power to change it. One simple method to adopt...say No to things that don't fall into your plan!
I hope that this idea gets your creative juices flowing? I hope you can start implementing the idea of "NO" right away. An amazing book to read that explains this concept is Essentialism - The disciplined pursuit of less by Greg McKeown.
The basic concept is only taking on what is Essential to reach your goals and nothing else! This will give you the time, energy, and freedom to truly enjoy all of your great passions in life. How do you do this...by saying NO to things that are not essential.
Live Your Best Life!
