While calories are extremely important when it comes to weight lose and body composition should that be your main focus?
You are going to hear different answers from different people but if you ask me my thoughts on IIFYM it is a bunch of B.S. and here's why...
Macro's (macronutrients) are simply a protein, carbohydrate, or a fat. On a basic level they provide your body with your daily source of energy to function and amino acids to repair your cells.
Now you might be asking what the hell IIFYM really is?
IIFYM is your total daily caloric intake broken down into how much protein, carbs, and fats you should be eating to reach your goal. For example, if your goal is fat loss your daily calories might be 2000 coming from 175 grams of protein, 89 grams of fat, and 125 grams of carbs.
With IIFYM there is no emphasis put on the type or quality of foods that you eat. If you need 125 grams of carbs it can come from rice, potatoes, sugar, bagels, or a Twinkie. The thought is that as long as you hit your target numbers you will get the results you are looking for.
Now I am all for a bowl of ice cream here and there but eating like this is a bunch of bull shit!
If looks is all you care about you can get (most) of the results you are looking for adhering to the IIFYM approach. Yes you can eat pizza, poptarts, and poutine and still lose weight.
BUT, if you care about your health, your longevity, and your performance, the IIFYM approach is total trash.
Here is a little tangent...
Want to know what the 5 main causes of death in North America are?
Heart disease, cancer, stroke, respiratory disease, and diabetes.
Now take a wild guess at common denominator of each one of these diseases? They are all lifestyle related. Every single one of these degenerative diseases can be drastically reduced by the lifestyle choices we choose to make with nutrition (and arguably sleep) being the most important.
I get that I take nutrition a little more "intensely" then most people. You do not need to eat all organic, only grass-fed meats, etc. to be a healthy individual. Although it does help.
But if you care enough about how you look why don't you care enough about your health to eat a clean healthy diet? Not 100% of the time but at least 80% of the time.
I am not saying eat perfect 24-7 but eating crappy food because you can still be lean is the completely wrong mindset...in my opinion.
And here is the kicker...if you put health, longevity, and performance first your body composition will simply follow. But reverse that order and you, in the long run, will be in a world of trouble.
IIFYM is a cop out. It is the simple, cheap, and unhealthy way to achieve the body composition you are looking for. If you really want to lose weight why don't you just smoke? Smoking is a 100% proven method for weight loss. Works every time. If looks is all you care about it is a sure fire method to help you achieve your goal.
I know I am coming across like a bit of ass but it is only because deep down I truly care. I want every single person to be as healthy as humanly possible and following the IIFYM style of eating is NOT the way the get there.
I am not saying never enjoy some of the palate pleasures that this world has to offer but what I am saying is to stop including them into your daily "diet" because you can still get lean by eating them.
Surgeries, steroids, and stimulants can all help you lose weight and get lean and if that is all you care about then go for it. But if you want to live a healthy, vibrant life, full of energy and longevity you MUST care about what you put into your body.
Eat well. Perform well. Live well and...
