Now there is really no way to "drink" in a healthy fashion. That is of course unless you stick to the 1 drink daily for women and two for men rule. If you follow this guideline and drink something like wine (which contains antioxidants or a hard liquor without mix) you are doing pretty good. All the things you hear about alcohol being "good" for you assumes you are sticking to moderate consumption.
What I want to talk about however are those nights when you are going to indulge into more than what is recommended as moderate. If you are going to have night filled with celebration, aka heavier drinking, what is the healthiest approach to take?
1. Clear Hard Alcohol.
Of course the HUGE disclaimer is that you need to drink these beverages straight or with water! The second you start adding soda, juice, and other sugary mixes all bets are off. Consuming fruity drinks can be even worse. Hint: if you really feel the need to mix with something with flavour, try kombucha!
2. Coloured Hard Alcohol.
These liqours are slightly higher in calories than the clear drinks but still a fairly decent choice. One added benefit when compared to the clear drinks is they contain some antioxidants!
3. Red Wine.
The deeper, higher quality wines have a better antioxidant:sulphite ratio. So when popping the cork spend a little extra on the good stuff!
4. White Wine.
Now beer also contains phenols and antioxidants, so the odd wobbly pop does have some added health benefits. Generally, the darker the beer the greater calories it contains. However, some stouts actually have less calories and more antioxidants then other beers!
Before your big night...
Make sure you continue to drink water throughout the night. Maybe most importantly try to avoid the urge to binge on all those carb and sugar heavy foods that we all seem crave when drinking.
