Weekends like this call for late nights, "bad" food, and of course the odd beverage or two. Personally I wouldn't have it any other way. Yes I live a life in pursuit of achieving optimal health but one of the reasons that I do it is so I can have many weekends like this with my closest friends and family.
I follow a fairly strict eating and training regime and do it 90% of the time. However when weekends like this roll around all bets are off. If you do not allow yourself to enjoy food and drinks with the people you love because you are too dedicated to your diet you might want to give your head a shake!
Friday evening we arrived in Lake Louise about 6 pm and met up with the fellow groomsmen and groom. We cracked open a few beers and talked about what a great weekend this was going to be. At 730 we wandered down to the lobby and had a short wedding rehearsal with the rest of the bridal party.
After the rehearsal everyone went to the pub in the hotel and we proceeded to order nachos and kept the drinks a flowin'! Some of my 3 closets buds and I stayed up after everyone had gone to bed and continued to enjoy some good scotch and each others company, which we never seem to get enough of.
The next morning we all met up for breakfast and man was it a breakfast. We all participated in destroying a buffet for the ages. Pancakes, omelettes, sausage, bacon, fritters, oh and croissant french toast were just some of the options we got to indulge in. And indulge I did. When I get the chance to eat amazing tasting foods like these I usually go off the deep end.
That is one of the best parts of eating a healthy diet for 90% of the time. When something like this comes around I allow myself to completely enjoy the foods and drinks with zero guilt. It is something that has taken some time and practice but I have somewhat "mastered" the cheat day (or in some cases cheat days)!
After breakfast all the groomsmen went for a little swim (no 1 hour eating and swimming rule applied here) then proceeded to get dressed for the big day. The event went off without a hitch and it was a beautiful ceremony.
After the ceremony we got some pictures taken then relaxed (while again enjoying some more food and drinks) while we waited to go to the reception. Once there it went as many weddings do...a little crazy. A great meal was quickly followed by lots of wine and of course the dance floor!
I am fortunate enough to be surrounded by some guys that can keep up with me on the d-floor. Oh if you know me personally you also know that is no hard task. We danced the night away before finally hitting the sack early in the morning.
It was a truly great weekend filled with great food, friends, and memories. While it was not a "healthy" weekend by any stretch of the imagination it was a weekend where memories were made and that is what is important.
Do not allow yourself you not enjoy some of the great pleasures in life. Driving on the road to optimal health is important and should be pursued by everyone. But every once in a while you need to take the scenic detour route to explore amazing places and create lifetime experiences.
