Red meat has taken a pretty bad rap in the last decade or so and in my opinion the beatings are unjustified. First of all almost every study that has concluded red meat increases your risk of developing a degenerative disease uses extremely poor quality meat. Using conventional beef from a feed lot would be a huge improvement compared to the garbage they use for these studies. Hot dogs, bologna, salami's, and other red meats are what is generally used to come up with these rather crazy conclusions.
While red meat does have an acidic effect on your body, if sourced in a healthy and sustainable way, beef (grass-fed) can be an extremely healthy protein source that you should include in your diet. And if you are looking for a great protein to pack on that muscle, look no further!
1. Reduces antibiotics, hormones, and other toxins.
Grass-fed beef is totally different. In fact most ranchers that grow grass-fed beef do not use any chemicals, hormones, steroids, or toxins. Cows get to rome free eating healthy grasses that they evolved to eat. Thats it...nothing more, nothing less.
2. Grass-fed beef has increased omega 3's.
While the omega 6 content of grass-fed beef vs grain-fed beef is generally the same, and we want to keep this low, the omega 3 content is vastly different. Grass-fed has anywhere from 4-7 times greater omega 3 content when compared to grain-fed beef.
3. Increased conjugated linoleic acid.
If you are finding purchasing grass-fed beef difficult due to its increased price, try buying lower quality cuts. Maybe eat more ground beef instead of tenderloin. Or maybe buy round steak and having fajitas instead of a ribeye.
I could go on and on about the increased health benefits of eating grass-fed beef. Above are some of the major reasons that can have a large impact on your health. Just remember next time you do buy grass-fed beef you are doing yourself, the planet, and the cow a huge service!
