Well, as good as all this sounds, let me be the first one (or maybe I am not) to tell you that breakfast is not the most important meal of the day!
1. It does not cause you to burn more calories!
The problem is however, eating causes you go to from a fat burning state to a glucose burning state. This is especially true if you eat a typical North American breakfast (cereal, porridge, muffins, bagels, doughnuts, toast, etc.). As soon as you eat a meal, especially a higher carb meal, your body will start to store fat in order process the glucose you have just consumed.
Simply put, the longer you go without eating in the morning, the more fat your body will burn during that period!
Disclaimer: Only skip/prolong breakfast if you can still eat a healthy meal later on. If skipping a healthy meal at home leaves you running to doughnut shop at work because you are going "pass out", then eat a healthy breakfast at home! Some great healthy breakfast ideas are a veggie omelette or a protein packed smoothie.
2. It does not have health benefits.
In fact quite the opposite is true. Fasting in the morning has a whole host of benefits some of which include, improved digestion, re-balancing of your hormones, and an improved insulin sensitivity. Skipping or prolonging a meal for any length of time anywhere from 14-48 hours is referred to as intermittent fasting. There are many different styles of intermittent fasting that we won't get into at the moment, but just know that there are many increased health factors that go along with it!
3. It does not make you lose weight.
I have found though personal experience and through coaching others that skipping or prolonging breakfast does not cause you eat more in subsequent meals. Now it is possible to eat more due to increased hunger but in my experience that is not that case for most. In general, people still maintain good judgement when sitting down to their first meal. It is only the people with little self control that think they "deserve" 10 waffles at lunch because they did not eat breakfast.
For the most part, people will still eat the same amount throughout the day if the skip or delay breakfast. This in and amongst it self causes increased fat loss due to the period of fat burning you will experience during your morning.
Now all of this might seem counterintuitive, and thats because it is! It goes against everything you have been taught to believe. If you have been following us long enough you know that most of our philosophies go against conventional wisdom. If you think about it, how has conventional nutrition wisdom done in maintain healthy populations?
I do want to make the point however that skipping or delaying breakfast is not for everyone! Only apply this concept if you still can manage to eat the same amount of calories throughout the day. Most importantly, that you are still eating healthy calories! If you are skipping breakfast but find yourself eating poorly quality, higher carb/sugar foods, due to an increased hunger, than STOP!!
