Diets don't work...better diets do!
We live by that motto. You need to learn what to eat and why. Strategies for weight loss need to able to be implemented easily for the rest of your life. That is one of our main goals is to teach nutrition methods that are simple, effective, fun, and enjoyable!
With that in mind we want to share with you two of the biggest reasons you may not be losing fat! These are not definitely not the only reasons you can't squeeze into your jeans, however these are two MAJOR contributors to why people are overweight.
1. Simply eating too much.
One of the largest reasons so many people are overweight is that they eat too many calories for their activity level. If you are a 5'10'' male who moves from chair to chair, you do not need to be eating 3000 calories a day. It can be easy to underestimate how many calories you are eating in a day, especially if you dine out often.
Here is an extremely basic calculation you can implement right now to try and lose that spare tire. Now I don't know how much you exercise, the types of foods you eat, your stress levels, etc. That is why I emphasize basic. But all things being equal this simple calculation does work.
If you are a male multiply your weight by 12 and that is approximately how many calories you should eat on a daily basis. If you are a female multiply your weight by 10. Try these daily calories out for a little while and if you are not seeing results cut back your calories a little more!
2. Eating too many processed/sugary/starchy carbs.
Generally however, people eat way too many carbs for their body type and/or activity level...especially processed sugary and starchy carbs. What do I mean by processed? Sugar or any other non-whole grains. Breads, pasta, bagels, cakes, muffins, you get the idea.
All of these foods cause a huge insulin response. Most people are insulin resistant and this combination only leads to one thing...fat gain!
Now I do not like most grains for that matter but I am not going to dig into the details here. If all you did was switch from processed carbs to "whole" carbs you should see a increase in your fat loss.
Here are some carbs to always try to avoid if you are focusing on weight loss:
- Wheat (even whole grain)
- White potatoes
- White rice (this is a fine line that I also won't get into here. Not everyone needs to avoid white rice but for a basic starting point avoid it for now)
Try eliminating these carbs 100% from your diet. You should see some relatively immediate results! If you are not you may need to cut back on a few more of your carbs or calories.
Give this two simple strategies a try and let us know your results!
